Autumn 2009.
Thorsmork is a beautiful nature reserve in between three glaciers, Myrdalsjokull glacier, Eyjafjallajokull glacier and Tindfjallajokull glacier, named after Thor, god of Thunder. The route to Thorsmork is a very beautiful and adventurous, crossing brooks and glacier rivers which only modified super jeeps can cross.
Thorsmork has many popular hiking routes and is one end of the popular route called Laugavegur as the main shopping street in Reykjavik. Laugavegur hiking route lies between Thorsmork and Landmannalaugar and takes 2-3 days to hike. Another popular hiking route from Thorsmork is over Fimmvorduhals, between the two glaciers Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull, ending in Skogar.
On our way to Thorsmork we visit the beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall which is 60 meters high (200 ft.) and also Gigjokull glacier which is an outlet glacier from Eyjafjallajokull glacier. This tour was taken last winter, before the eruption in Eyjafjallajokull so below you will see a photo of Gigjokull lagoon before it flooded with mud and ash from the volcano.
When you get to Thorsmork a magical world opens up with green valleys full of trees and vegetation, something you would not have expected at all. Enjoy.
